PrEP and PEP

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is the use of antiretroviral medication to prevent acquisition of HIV infection; it consists of one pill taken once a day and is efficacious and easy to use. PrEP is an effective prevention strategy for reducing HIV acquisition risk by 90-99% if taken as prescribed and is recommended for men who have sex with men (MSM), people who inject drugs (PWID), transgender men and women, and heterosexual adults who are at high risk for HIV infection1.

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is the use of antiretroviral medication for 28 days to prevent acquisition of HIV after a possible sexual or injection drug use exposure. It must be started within 72 hours of the exposure.

The Denver PTC can assist with:

  • Clinic protocols for PrEP and PEP
  • Clinical consultation for patient management
  • Sexual risk assessment tools, resources for identifying eligible patients, and patient counseling tools
  • Training on the science and implementation of PrEP and PEP, as well as the counseling that should be offered in support of PrEP and PEP
  • Process documents and tools to assist with incorporating PrEP and PEP into your clinic’s flow
  • Pharmaceutical and pharmacy partnership guidance
